Has anyone else noticed a big drop in the number of postings since the site required registration? Is this a good thing or are we just squashing free speech?

Well, if you can register as "McGruff", I don't think free speech is in much jeopardy here.

What's wrong with McGruff? You don't like my screen name? Pretty much no different than BigBeare, isn't it? Have I done something to offend you?

I don't care what your screen name is. The fact that you can use an absurd screen name means that the requirement to register on this message board is not a hindrance to free speech.
But, you knew that. |

I think McGruff has a point... although "squashing free speech" may be a little extreme.
There used to be a lot more posts before this change, and from a variety of sources. Now, it is down to just a few people. I, myself, am a bit skittish when it comes to registering... partly because I don't like the rigmarole of signing up and remembering another password, but more importantly, because I don't like giving personal information away over the net unnecessarily (as is part of the registration process)... and my guess is that those who used to post and no longer do feel the same way. Beare, I can understand why you are in favor of registration... you were the subject of some pretty scathing, unwarranted flames by anons... and I would probably feel the same way if I were you, but I do think that the registration, as well as the fear of getting a virus from this board, have lowered the board activity, and the board has suffered as a result. |

Now I understand why BigBeare got flamed on this board so often....he is in fact a rude a$$hole. BigBeare may be your made-up name, but McGruff is actually a family name in my family (no, not my name, and not my mother's maiden name---i wouldn't put that on the web) but something like that. And, yes, I've heard all the "crime dog" jokes before, save it.
So you think my screen name is absurd? Fine. There are plenty of people on this board (or used to be, at least, before you drove them away) who thought far worse than that of you. The fact is that it's your arrogant postings that get people worked up and have diminshed the usefullness of the board. Registration has just made it worse. As Explomikey noted, the board is suffering, and we can thank Beare for it. Now, you can have the last word, since the rest of us are basically done with this board. Maybe you can post replies to yourself. |

(1) The name BigBeare is absurd, too.
(2) I'm sure Desmond Crisis had a good reason for changing the board to require registration. (3) Personally, I don't care one way or the other whether people are registered or not. I don't carry any personal stuff away from this website, or any other message board or Usenet newsgroup. The only opinions that truly matter to me are those of my friends. I do not live my life here. A message board is not real life. People's flames don't bother me because I have no time in my life to be annoyed by anonymous people. I have a life to live before it gets taken away from me. If people don't wish me to post here anymore, I'll consider just going away and skipping the community meetings, too. I thought I was posting helpful things. If I'm failing to be helpful, I can use my time elsewhere. |
